The new comers from Estonia, Germany, Lithuania and Turkey joined the participants form: Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, United Kingdom and the USA. The International event has started with the opening of the exhibition of all the projects and the common dinner at the Hotel Hilton in Innsbruck. Zdenka Debartoli, International Building Manager, welcomed the guests and the jury and presented the contest evolution.
The subject of the 2010 competition was the creative approach to the concept of energy efficient constructions at the passive-house level on existing buildings.
The aim was to redesign an existing post industrial building, patient based on an old warehouse in Paris (France) according to ISOVER MULTI COMFORT HOUSE definition and with passive house components.
The planned redesign with renovation and revitalisation should have given a new impulse in the existing urban area.
There were no restriction in the concept of future usage and the function of the building....
The location is situated between the canal on the north and Avenue Jean Lolive on the south. The eastern border is Rue Ernest Renand and the western border the extension of Avenue Jean Lolive. The canal is still used to transport both goods and passengers.
Students had an unrestricted choice to select the future usage of the building, sale an existing post-industrial warehouse, physician which has to be revitalised and renovated. The renovated building had to have the building physics performance of an ISOVER MULTI COMFORT HOUSE.
Beside constructional, the social and economic aspects also had to be considered and respected as the revitalisation of this subject had to give a new impulse in the existing urban area.
1.2. Space allocation
According to the concept of function of the building, additional requirements had to be considered e.g. accessibility, parking places for cars, bicycles and motorcycles.
The outdoor area should have been included in the concept and external plans had to be roughly designed.
1.3. Type of construction, technical parameters
The bearing construction is reinforced concrete. The frame construction is fully filled with brick masonry and wide shape doors and windows.
If the concept is to have any changes in the bearing construction, this can be chosen freely as wooden frame, masonry or steel constructions.
The high-performance thermal, acoustic and fire protection requirements had to be considered in order to achieve the ISOVER MULTI COMFORT HOUSE criteria.
In order to achieve the MULTI COMFORT HOUSE e criteria the following requirements had to be satisfied:
1.3.1 Thermal insulation:
The exterior structural components should have had the following U-values, recommended for moderate climate zones:
● All opaque external constructions U ≤ 0.15 W/m2K, or R > 38 (1/BTUITh-1 ft-2 oF -1) for compact building shape (e.g. existing shape)
● All opaque external constructions U ≤ 0.10 W/m2K, or R > 57 (1/BTUITh-1 ft-2 oF -1) for non-compact building shape
● Windows and doors U Wtotal ≤ 0.8 W/m2K, or R > 7 (1/BTUITh-1 ft-2 oF -1)
1.3.2. Protection against overheating in summer
Sufficient outside sun protection for the eastern, southern and westward windows needed to be planned according to the future function of the warehouse.
In the project the ratio of transparent to opaque components also needed to be taken in account.
The frequency of overheating of more than +25oC or +77oF indoor temperature had to be less than 10%.
1.3.3. Technical parameters for fire protection
Fire protection should have achieve the European requirements:
● all bearing internal and external walls - at least REI 60 according to ISO standards,
● the roof and ceilings - at least REI 60 according to ISO standards,
● all non-bearing internal walls between 2 functional units (depending on the function)-at least REI 30 according to ISO standards.
The construction fire sections and the emergency exits had to be considered.
1.3.4. Technical parameters for sound insulation.
Depending on the future function of the building the sound protection concept had to be included.
The airborne and impact sound insulation of the residential and non-residential buildings had to be planed according to ISOVER Acoustic Comfort Classes.
Reverberation time had to be taking in to account based upon the function and the type of the building.
Following criteria had to be achieved in case of:
Residential building or similar function:
● Airborne sound insulation between dwellings DnT,w ≥63 dB
● Airborne sound insulation between the rooms in the dwelling (without the doors) DnT,w ≥45 dB
● Impact sound insulation between dwellings: LnT,w ≤ 40 dB
● Impact sound insulation in the dwelling: LnT,w ≤ 50 dB
● Airborne sound insulation for the exterior walls Rw ≥55 dB
● Airborne sound insulation for the roof Rw ≥50 dB
● Airborne sound insulation between special protected areas in the building Rw ≥55 dB
● Airborne sound insulation for all ceilings Rw ≥55 dB
● Impact sound insulation for all floors: LnT,w ≤ 45 dB.
All ceilings in non-residential usage should have been designed to comply with Sound Absorption Class A to EN ISO 11654.

International Stage Winners 2010
This year's competition was the sixth time that students from all over the world were given the opportunity to deliver proof of their knowledge about energy-efficient building methods.
The subject of the MULTI COMFORT HOUSE STUDENT CONTEST. was the renovation of a five-floor warehouse in the Parisian quarter of Pantin. The participants were free to decide on the new function and use of the building, but the suggested renovation solutions had to meet passive-house standards, i.e. highest thermal comfort with resultant energy and CO2 savings.
The talented young architecture students impressed with extraordinary ideas. Among the projects was a hotel, a library, a textile factory, a museum, a shopping mall, a student residence, a vocational training centre, a meeting place for young people, an artist's workshop and many more all of them complying with the passive-house principle offering optimum comfort in summer and winter and also effective noise protection.
After several hours of deliberation the jury, compounded from:
